Coco, the next Disney Movie in te reo Māori
Matewa Media have announced the two-time Academy Award winning movie, Coco, will be the next animated film that will be reimagined in te Reo Māori. Coco will be the fourth movie reimagined by Matewa Media following Moana, The Lion King and Frozen.
Coco Reo Māori Director, Tweedy Waititi, believes that Coco will be well received by Māori due to similar cultural themes expressed. Coco, based on the celebration of the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), a day of remembering their ancestors who have passed on is similar to Matariki, when Māori acknowledge passed loved ones. Fittingly, Coco Reo Māori will be premiered in participating cinemas for Matariki, July 2023.
Matewa Media are now calling for arero Māori to audition for roles within the movie. The movie will be recreated in te reo Māori i te mita o Te Tairāwhiti, acknowledging the Spanish whakapapa within Ngāti Porou whānau. Successful auditioners do not have to whakapapa to Te Tairāwhiti, however, they will need to portray the correct accent and have a strong resonation with the characters of Coco. Auditions opened on the Monday, 19 December, and will close Sunday, 19 February 2023. All audition information can be found on Matewa Media’s website.
