Thousands of people from all over the world gather in Buñol, Spain, on the last Wednesday of August every year to take part in a giant tomato battle – and this year was no different.

La Tomatina is probably the messiest festival in the world, with over 100 tons of over-ripe tomatoes used in the most epic food fight ever.

It is an hour of complete chaos and pure fun for all involved, with tomatoes being thrown and squashed in every direction.

It is expected that you squash the tomato before throwing it at someone to avoid it hurting and many decide to wear goggles to keep the squishy mess out of their eyes.

Around 40,000 people travel to the tiny town to participate in the festival which has taken place since around 1944 and is believed to have began after one of the city’s councilmen was attack with tomatoes.

Here’s a tip: don’t wear good clothes in this town on the last Wednesday of August!
