Ōtāhuhu, a suburb in South Auckland, is about to hit the big screen as Jason Momoa films his new action movie The Wrecking Crew in the area. From October 23 to November 6, locals will notice roads closed and hear sounds like screeching tyres and small explosions as the movie crew takes over some streets.

Councillor Alf Filipaina shared his excitement, saying this project will promote Ōtāhuhu, Tāmaki Makaurau, and all of New Zealand. He added that more filming brings opportunities to the local economy. This isn’t the first time the suburb has been used in movies—Once Were Warriors, a famous Kiwi film, was also shot in the area.

Filipaina emphasised the teamwork involved, with local businesses and organisations like Mealamu Security and Auckland Transport helping out. “The community is working together to ensure everything runs smoothly,” he said. Locals are looking forward to seeing their neighbourhood shine on screen.

Filming will also benefit nearby businesses, as the movie crew will purchase food and supplies from local shops. The Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board said the buzz around the project is growing, with people hoping for a chance to spot Jason Momoa during filming.

To keep the production safe, parts of Queen St, Park Ave, and Hall Ave will close during the filming period. Access to key services like medical facilities, pharmacies, and churches will remain open. Public transport will run as usual, and police will be on-site to monitor the activity.

“We’re proud to feature Ōtāhuhu and hope this opens doors for more international projects,” Moimoi said. “Ōtāhuhu is going to look great on the big screen!”
