ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Did you know that the National Anthem wasn’t always in English and te reo Māori? In 1991, Dame Hinewehi Mohi sang it in te reo Māori at an All-Blacks match in England. Despite criticism, her action paved the way for our bilingual anthem that we hear at major international events today.

In 2019, during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Dame Hinewehi launched Waiata Anthems to celebrate 20 years since she sang the National Anthem in te reo Māori.

Dame Hinewehi worked with 11 popular New Zealand artists to create an album of their hit songs in te reo Māori. Artists who feature in Waiata Anthems include Lorde, Drax Project, Six60, Benee, Hollie Smith and more. Many of these artists had never sung in Māori before but were all up for the challenge.

In September 2022, 26 new waiata were released to celebrate several special events, such as the 50th anniversary of Te Matatini and the Māori Language Petition being presented to Parliament, and the 40th anniversary of Kōhanga Reo and Te Karere.

Waiata Anthems can be streamed on major platforms, and TVNZ offers a behind-the-scenes series on the translation process.
