Thousands of Tibetan Buddhists from around the world came together in the Himalayan town of Dharamshala to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama. The celebration took place at the main temple where the spiritual leader lives in exile. Despite heavy rain, monks, nuns, and followers filled the streets to honour him.
The Dalai Lama, whose real name is Tenzin Gyatso, has been living in India since 1959 after fleeing from Tibet during a time of conflict with China. His birthday celebration drew large crowds, including celebrities and officials from India and the United States.
Earlier this week, the Dalai Lama announced that he plans to reincarnate after his death. This means he believes he will be reborn, following ancient Buddhist tradition. He also shared his hope to live until he is 130 years old.
The Dalai Lama is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and is known for promoting kindness, peace, and compassion. He calls himself a “simple Buddhist monk,” but many Tibetans believe he is the human form of a holy being called Chenrezig.
Since leaving Tibet, the Dalai Lama has helped keep Tibetan culture alive in exile and remains a symbol of hope for many people seeking peace and freedom.
