Australia have kept hold of the Rose Bowl trophy after beating the White Ferns by 40 runs at North Sydney Oval on Tuesday night.

The win gives Australia an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match Twenty20 (T20) series. T20 is a short, fast form of cricket where each team bats for 20 overs.

Vice-captain Ash Gardner was the star, scoring 84 runs from just 45 balls, including 10 fours and four sixes. Her big innings helped Australia reach 6-167, which means they scored 167 runs and lost six wickets.

New Zealand never really got close and finished on 8-127. White Ferns captain Melie Kerr was their top scorer with 32 runs, while Australian leg-spinner Georgia Wareham took three wickets for just 18 runs.

It was Australia’s 12th T20 win in a row. Gardner said captain Sophie Molineux had brought a sense of fun to the team. “When you’re enjoying yourself and you’re having fun it creates an environment of growth and wanting to learn and challenge yourself,” she said.

Australia have held the Rose Bowl for more than 26 years. The trophy will be up for grabs again in March in a three-match one-day series, the first time it has been played for twice in the same season.

The final T20 game of the series is on Thursday.
