Auckland will host the PSA Squash World Championships in February 2028, the New Zealand Government announced this week, just months before squash makes its first-ever appearance at the 2028 Olympic Games.

The championships will be held at the Auckland International Convention Centre, in a special glass-walled court that lets crowds watch the fast-paced sport from every angle.

The Government is putting $1 million towards the event through its Major Events Fund, hoping it will bring squash fans and top players from all over the world to Auckland.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said the win was something New Zealand could be proud of. “The World Championships are one of the most prestigious events in world squash. I’m proud for New Zealand to host players and crowds from around the world,” she said.

Upston said the timing made the event extra special. “Securing the PSA Squash World Championships is a fantastic win for New Zealand, for Auckland and for the future of squash in this country, and this excitingly comes just months before squash makes its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games,” she said.

Squash has never been part of the Olympics before, so its debut at the Los Angeles Games in 2028 will be a historic moment for players everywhere, including here in New Zealand.

With more than a year to go until the championships, young squash players around the country now have something exciting to aim for.

Parents donated prizes, and teachers helped supervise the stalls. By the end of the day, the school had raised more than $1,200. However, the principal said the most important result was not the money itself, but the way the event showed students could work together for a shared goal.
