New Zealand is planning a big event to reclaim the world record for the largest haka, currently held by France.

The attempt will take place at Auckland’s Eden Park on September 29, led by Dame Hinewehi Mohi, a well-known musician. Mohi hopes to gather 10,000 people to perform the famous haka “Ka Mate” and bring the record back to Aotearoa.

The current record was set in 2014 when 4,028 people in France performed the haka. Mohi said the event is an opportunity to unite people in the spirit of kotahitanga and celebrate New Zealand’s cultural heritage. The record attempt will also raise money for the Raukatauri Music Therapy Centre, which Mohi founded.

Mohi believes it is important to restore the cultural integrity of the haka, which she feels was missing in France’s performance. “It’s really important to bring the mana of the world record back to Aotearoa, because it is undeniably us,” she said. Participants need at least 4,029 people to break the current record, but they hope to attract many more.

Anyone can join the event, even those without kapa haka experience. There is a small participation fee, which will support the music therapy centre. People can join on the pitch or even participate online, making the event accessible to everyone who wants to be part of this cultural celebration.
