As 2026 Anzac Day commemorations approach, Head of Veterans’ Affairs Alex Brunt acknowledges the significant commitment made by veterans past and present.
He also wants to remind all present-day veterans and their whānau what government support is available.
“Anzac Day is a deeply significant moment for personal and national remembrance,” he said.
“As a country and free society, we pause to honour all New Zealanders who have shown immense courage, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment both at home and overseas in service of their country.
“As we head towards Anzac Day, veterans, along with their friends and whānau, will come together to reflect and remember those who have served New Zealand in times of war, conflict, and disaster.
“We acknowledge their service with gratitude and hold close the stories, sacrifice, and legacy they leave behind.”
Mr Brunt said Veterans’ Affairs’ goal was to ensure that veterans receive the support they were eligible for.
“As veterans gather and reflect, many may have health problems that could be related their service. Some may not know what support they are entitled to.
“We strongly encourage veterans to check their eligibility and discover what assistance we can offer.”

“Finding out what support is available could make a big difference to their lives,” Mr Brunt said.
Veterans’ Affairs (part of the New Zealand Defence Force ) provides support, rehabilitation, and compensation to thousands of former armed forces personnel with service-related illnesses or injuries, and their families.
Veterans’ Affairs operates under the requirements of the Veterans’ Support Act 2014, the New Zealand law that defines support, rehabilitation, and compensation for veterans with qualifying service and their families.
