Hundreds of thousands of students across Aotearoa are sitting a new online test called SMART this year, and Kiwi Kids News has a handy tool to help them prepare. to use the tool just click here.

SMART, short for Student Monitoring, Assessment and Reporting Tool, checks how students in Years 3 to 10 are getting on in reading, writing and maths. It replaced an older test called e-asTTle, and by June, more than 1300 schools and 220,000 students had already used it.

Schools sit SMART twice a year, and some schools have their second round this term.

The Ministry of Education says SMART isn’t a high-stakes test like an exam. Instead, it helps teachers see what each student can already do, and what they need to learn next.

The Kiwi Kids News SMART Practice tool lets students pick a quiz by year level, subject and skill, then answer short multiple-choice questions like the ones they may see in the real test. kiwikidsnews

Reading quizzes cover skills such as finding key information and spotting the main idea, while writing quizzes focus on punctuation, grammar and organising ideas. Maths quizzes include number problems, patterns, measurement, geometry and statistics. kiwikidsnews
