Australia’s Kangaroos have beaten New Zealand’s Kiwis 24-22 in a thrilling opening match of the Rugby League World Cup.
The game was packed with amazing tries and dramatic twists, and the lead swapped between the two teams several times.
Kiwis centre Casey McLean scored the first try of the tournament. He managed to put the ball down in the corner, even though his whole body was being pushed over the sideline. The scores were tied at 10-all at half-time.
Kiwis fullback Kalyn Ponga scored two tries in the second half to help put New Zealand back in front. Australia’s Reece Walsh replied with a stunning try of his own, sprinting about 80 metres to score.
But Australia’s Jack Bostock scored three tries, known as a hat-trick. His last one was the winning try, with just four minutes left on the clock.
Sadly for the Kiwis, Ponga was forced off the field with a suspected broken arm.
The loss isn’t expected to hurt New Zealand’s chances of reaching the semi-finals, which are the games that decide who plays in the final.
Te Reo Māori
Kua hinga i te kapa Kangaroos o Ahitereiria te kapa Kiwis o Aotearoa, 24-22, i te kēmu tuatahi whakaongaonga o te Rugby League World Cup.
I kī tēnei kēmu i ngā piro mīharo me ngā hurihanga ohorere, ā, he maha ngā wā i huri ai te kapa kei mua.
Engari e toru ngā piro a Jack Bostock o Ahitereiria, he “hat-trick” te ingoa.
