New Zealand swimmer Lewis Clareburt broke two of his own national swimming records at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, over the weekend.
Clareburt swam in five events at the meet and made the final in every single one of them, a brilliant result against swimmers from all over the world.
He broke New Zealand’s 200m individual medley record, swimming it in 1 minute 53.63 seconds to finish fifth. That beat a record which had stood since 2018, set by fellow Kiwi swimmer Bradlee Ashby. Clareburt also broke his own 400m individual medley record, finishing fifth in a time of 4 minutes 3.02 seconds.
Both of his new times are fast enough to qualify him for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Beijing, China, in December.
He wasn’t the only Kiwi swimming well in Baku. Teammate Caitlin Deans won a silver medal in the women’s 800m freestyle, touching in 8 minutes 17.51 seconds, and also qualified for Beijing in the 400m freestyle.
The World Cup series now moves on to its second stop, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 8 to 10 October, where Clareburt will be hoping to keep up his record-breaking form.
