New Zealand runner Sam Tanner has broken the national road mile record at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The 26-year-old crossed the line in 3 minutes 56.01 seconds, finishing 12th in the race, but still smashing the previous New Zealand record of 3:58.45, which had been set by Geordie Beamish in Hawaii in 2025.
Tanner was the top-finishing New Zealander in the morning session of racing.
The race itself was won by Germany’s Robert Farken, who crossed the line in 3:51.80. Australia’s Oliver Hoare also had a big day, breaking the Oceania road mile record with a time of 3:53.65 to finish sixth.
Two other Kiwis competed in the women’s race that day, with Alison Andrews-Paul finishing 36th and Kimberley May finishing 37th.
Breaking a long-standing national record is a huge achievement, especially against some of the best middle-distance runners in the world. Tanner’s run shows New Zealand athletics continuing to make its mark on the international stage.
