Jetstar making overhead baggage cost more

Jetstar is changing the way passengers take carry-on luggage onto its planes. From February next year, every passenger will still be able to bring one small bag on board for free, but larger carry-on suitcases that go in the overhead lockers will now cost extra.

The free bag must fit under the seat in front of you and can weigh up to 10 kilograms. Items such as backpacks, handbags or laptop bags will usually fit these rules. However, if travellers want to bring a larger suitcase into the cabin, they will need to pay at least $23 for a Priority Carry-on option. These passengers will also board the plane earlier, making it easier to find space in the overhead lockers.

Jetstar says the new system is designed to make travelling simpler. Instead of worrying about a strict 7kg weight limit, passengers will only need to make sure their bag fits within the correct size. The airline hopes this will reduce delays caused by people searching for space in the overhead lockers and help flights leave on time.

There are no changes to checked baggage. Passengers who already pay to check a suitcase can continue doing so as normal.
