A young seal has had an unusual adventure after being found wandering through a South Auckland suburb.
Police received a call from a concerned member of the public after the seal pup was spotted exploring the streets of Papakura. Officers contacted the Department of Conservation for advice on what to do.
After receiving guidance, police safely moved the seal pup back to a more suitable natural environment.
The Department of Conservation works to protect New Zealand’s wildlife, including seals that sometimes travel away from the coast.
Police described the rescue as an “ex-seal-ent job” and said the little traveller had a happy ending.
Experts remind people that seals should not be approached because they are wild animals. If people see a seal in an unusual place, they should contact the right authorities for help.
