Fire crews responded to a fire at Wellington Airport on Tuesday night after smoke was seen coming from a terminal building. The southwest pier and main terminal building were evacuated after a smoke alarm was triggered. Wellington Airport said no one was reported to be hurt.
Firefighters from around Wellington were called to the airport to help deal with the blaze. The New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union said it was a third alarm fire, which means several fire crews were needed. A second high-reaching aerial appliance was also requested to help firefighters reach the fire.
Emergency services, including Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the Airport Fire Service, were at the scene. Police officers were also expected to help people leave airport buildings safely. Flights into Wellington were temporarily diverted, and passengers were advised to check with their airlines for updates.
Wellington Airport said it would provide more information as it became available. The cause of the fire had not been confirmed in the information given.
