Auckland FC will play the A-League grand final at home against Sydney FC.
Sydney FC knocked out the Newcastle Jets in a dramatic semifinal on penalties. The Jets, who had won the Premier’s Plate for finishing top of the regular season, couldn’t hold on after both teams were level after extra time. Sydney FC advanced on penalties, setting up a final against Auckland.
Because Auckland finished the regular season ahead of Sydney, they get to host the grand final on their own turf. The match will be played at Go Media Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday, 23 May, kicking off at 8.10pm.
This is a big deal for New Zealand football. It will be the first ever A-League grand final held in New Zealand, and Auckland FC have the chance to become the first Kiwi team to win the title.
It hasn’t been easy getting here. Last season, Auckland’s hopes were ended by Melbourne Victory in the semifinal. The season before that, Victory also knocked out the Wellington Phoenix at the same stage. So reaching the grand final is already a historic achievement for the club.
Auckland FC CEO Nick Becker said the occasion was huge, not just for the club but for football across the country. He said he was proud of the players and excited for what is ahead. Tickets go on sale Monday, and fans will be hoping for a massive crowd to cheer the team on.
