Auckland returned to the top of the A-League Men table on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Sydney FC at GoMedia Stadium. The only goal came from striker Sam Cosgrove in the 20th minute, helping Auckland break a run of three matches without a win.

Sydney FC, who were hoping to go top with a victory, struggled to match the energy of their previous game and had trouble defending against Auckland’s long throw-ins. One of these led to the goal, with Cosgrove finishing from close range after a clever setup by Hiroki Sakai.

Auckland continued to pressure in the first half, nearly scoring again through Louis Verstraete and Cosgrove. Sydney’s goalkeeper, Harrison Devenish-Meares, had to make some important saves to keep the score close.

In the second half, Sydney tried to turn the game around by bringing on Joe Lolley and creating several chances. Pierro Quispe missed a good shot, and Tiago Quintal hit the woodwork. Auckland also hit the post on a quick counterattack.

Despite late pressure from Sydney, Auckland held firm and secured a clean-sheet victory. The result keeps Auckland just ahead of Newcastle at the top of the table, at least until Newcastle play again.

This win also keeps Auckland manager Steve Corica unbeaten against his old club in both the league and the Australia Cup.
