Bosco, a famous surfing French bulldog, made a joyful return to the sea at Paihia on Waitangi Day.
Riding his surfboard proudly, he flew the He Whakaputanga flag just before the traditional waka celebrations began. Alongside him was Treasure, an 18-month-old French bulldog learning to surf by watching Bosco.
Their owner, Dylan Bacher, said being part of the day was about supporting the culture and youth. He wanted to show that everyone can join in and celebrate together.
Bacher said the feeling out on the water was magical. “Seeing the waka from out there is something truly special,” he shared.
When the dogs returned to shore, they were met with big smiles and loud cheers from tamariki and their whānau. “The kids love them,” Bacher said. “You could hear them calling from the beach!”
Known online as “Bosco’s Pirate Life,” the dogs have become internet stars, with over 52,000 followers on TikTok and videos reaching millions of views.
Some people have playfully called Bosco “Ngāti Kuri,” a mix of Māori culture and the Māori word for dog, kuri.
Bacher said Bosco and Treasure only go surfing when they feel ready and happy. “They choose it themselves,” he explained. “Bosco hops on, and now Treasure does too.”
