The famous Fabergé Winter Egg, made in 1913 for Russian Empress Maria Feodorovna, is expected to sell for a record-breaking price. Designed by Alma Pihl, one of the only women to create such eggs, it was a special Easter gift from Czar Nicholas II to his mother.
The Winter Egg is known for its sparkling design, often called the “Mona Lisa” of decorative art. It’s one of over 50 eggs created by Peter Carl Fabergé’s workshop for the Russian royal family between 1885 and 1917. Each egg included a hidden surprise and was carefully crafted to be unique.
The tradition began when Czar Alexander III gave one to his wife for Easter. Nicholas II later continued the tradition with both his wife and mother.
After the Russian Revolution in 1917, the royal Romanov family was overthrown and later executed. Many of their treasures, including the Fabergé eggs, were sold by the new government. The Winter Egg was bought in the 1920s for just £450 and went missing for twenty years. It resurfaced in 1994 and sold at auction for over 7 million Swiss francs. In 2002, it was sold again for £9.6 million.
Now, experts believe it may break the record £18.5 million paid in 2007 for another Fabergé egg. Of the 50 imperial eggs, only 43 are known to still exist, with most kept in museums.
