After more than 30 years on New Zealand television, Simon Dallow has read the news for the last time.
On Friday, he gave his final sign-off on 1News at Six, thanking viewers and colleagues for their support over the years.
Dallow told viewers it had been a privilege to be invited into their homes each night. He said he always believed newsreaders should not be the focus, and hoped his work had helped people understand the news clearly and fairly.
He also thanked the 1News team, thanking their daily efforts to bring the news to the nation. Dallow spoke about the mix of good and difficult stories he had covered, saying shared experiences bring people together.
Dallow joined TVNZ in 1993 after working as a lawyer. Over the years, he presented many shows, including Newsnight, Agenda, and Q&A. In 2006, he began co-hosting 1News at Six with Wendy Petrie. Since 2020, he has been the solo anchor.
He became a familiar face during major national events such as the Canterbury earthquakes, the Christchurch mosque attacks, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
TVNZ leaders praised Dallow for his professionalism and honesty. They said his work helped make 1News at Six the most-watched news programme in the country.
Melissa Stokes will now present on weekdays, and Jack Tame will take over on weekends.
Dallow ended his final bulletin with a warm holiday message: “Merry Christmas and a sunny summer ahead. Pō mārie, goodnight and good luck.”
