A second Costco store is coming to the Auckland region, and this time it will be in Drury, south of the city.
Kiwi Property, a property developer, has agreed to sell a 6.4-hectare piece of land to the American retail giant for the new store site. It will be built near State Highway 1, at the southern end of a new development.
Although the opening date has not been confirmed yet, Costco says it hopes to serve its growing number of members in South Auckland, as well as in Hamilton and the Waikato region. The plan still needs final approval, but the company is excited about the location.
This new store will follow the success of Costco’s first New Zealand store at Westgate, which has proven very popular. In its second full year of trading, that store made $361.5 million in revenue.
The Drury location is part of a much larger project by Kiwi Property. The full 53-hectare development will include homes, shops, offices, and community spaces. It’s expected to bring more than $1.45 billion to the Auckland economy over the next 11 years.
New Zealand’s government is supporting the project, calling it good news for jobs and growth. Around 3,420 full-time jobs in construction and related services are expected to be created.
Officials also say that more supermarkets like Costco mean better prices and more choices for shoppers.
