Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to take part in the East Asia Summit, a major meeting of leaders from across the region.
The summit is being held under strict security, with thousands of police officers and a lockdown in parts of the city.
Luxon joins leaders such as US President Donald Trump, who is attending the ASEAN meeting to witness a new peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
The East Asia Summit is also focusing on trade issues. President Trump’s tariffs on many countries have caused tension, and he plans to meet China’s President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit later this week in Korea to discuss their ongoing trade disputes.
Luxon’s main aim at the summits is to grow New Zealand’s trade connections and partnerships across Asia. He is hoping to sign a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN countries, which would improve co-operation, trade, and support for education and development.
While at the summit, Luxon has also arranged private talks with leaders from Malaysia, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Timor Leste, with more meetings expected.
