Popular Kiwi TV drama Shortland Street will return in 2026, TVNZ and South Pacific Pictures have confirmed.
The decision comes thanks to funding from NZ On Air and the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate.
The long-running series faced uncertainty due to cost-cutting at TVNZ and challenges in the wider media industry. In July 2024, the broadcaster announced the show would air three nights a week instead of five. The government also recently updated rebate rules for local programmes with “strong industry and cultural value,” which helped secure Shortland Street’s future.
TVNZ chief executive Jodi O’Donnell said the show’s popularity, both on TV and online, made it worth continuing. She added that the funding would help during its shift to a more digital-first model. The drama is already one of TVNZ+’s most streamed programmes.
For nearly three decades, Shortland Street ran without funding support, but it is now transitioning to a mix of commercial funding and digital delivery. Kelly Martin, head of South Pacific Pictures, said the series remains important for showcasing New Zealand stories and providing steady jobs for local talent.
Fans can look forward to more hospital drama, memorable characters, and surprising twists when the show’s new season arrives in 2026.
