UN says Gaza needs food urgently

The United Nations (UN) and over 100 charities are warning that people in Gaza urgently need food.

Doctors have reported cases of starvation, especially among children and older adults, with some people already taken to hospital due to hunger.

The crisis began in March 2025 when Israel blocked aid deliveries to Gaza. The Israeli government said this was because Hamas, a group that controls Gaza, would not agree to peace talks. Although the blockade was eased after two months, the food shortage has actually gotten worse.

Aid groups and the UN say the main reason for the lack of food is Israel’s actions. They say people are being harmed at aid drop-off points controlled by the Israeli military. These are the places where food is supposed to be given out.

The group of 100 aid organisations is calling on governments around the world to take strong steps to make sure food reaches the people who need it. They say the situation is now life-threatening.

By 3:30 p.m., the sky over the harbour had turned a flat grey. The wind pushed against the classroom windows, and the flag outside the office snapped so hard it looked as if it might tear. During the afternoon assembly, only half the students sang the school song. Many kept glancing towards the doors, where rain had begun to streak across the glass. The principal finished early and reminded everyone to take home their jackets and lunches before heading to the buses.

What is most likely happening at the school?
