Elephant Burma makes new friend

Burma, an Asian elephant from Auckland Zoo, has had her first “trunk-to-trunk” meeting in her new home at Monarto Safari Park, South Australia.

She was relocated in November 2024, and now, less than two months later, she has met Permai, a 35-year-old female elephant from Perth Zoo. Permai arrived at Monarto Safari Park on Wednesday and is the first of four elephants joining Burma in South Australia.

The elephants greeted each other by linking trunks on Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, they were gently touching and sniffing, which experts say are positive signs of bonding. However, Permai is still adjusting after her long journey. Elephant keeper Andrew, who moved from Auckland Zoo to Monarto with his team, said they are taking things slowly. “We’re on elephant time here, just taking things day by day,” he explained.

The keepers’ priority now is ensuring Permai settles in, eats well, and gets enough rest. Once she is comfortable, they will focus on strengthening her bond with Burma.

The arrival of more elephants in the coming months will help create a new herd, giving Burma, who lived alone in Auckland, a chance to form lasting friendships.
