TVNZ, New Zealand’s major television network, has proposed big changes, including shutting down its 1News website and app by February 2025.

The company’s plan, shared with staff by CEO Jodi O’Donnell, aims to address a $30 million revenue shortfall. Instead of traditional news platforms, TVNZ plans to focus on video storytelling through its Re: News brand.

The company also plans to outsource some of its daily operations and adjust staff schedules. It intends to create a “Creative Hub” and a team focused on digital news for its streaming service, TVNZ+. These changes come as TVNZ tries to stay competitive after a steep drop in advertising income. The final decisions will be made after considering staff feedback.
