Te Rā, the only known customary Māori waka sail in existence, has returned to New Zealand for a short time.

The piece, stored at the British Museum in London, is currently at the Christchurch Art Gallery and will move to the Auckland War Memorial Museum from November 18th before returning to London in May.

This nearly four-and-a-half-meter-high sail, made of harakeke, boasts a complex three-way pattern, a testament to Māori weaving skill and sailing history.

Accompanied by two sibling sails, Te Rā will be on display, offering a glimpse into a little-known aspect of Māori history.
