A squadron from World War II is returning to service, but this time, it’s heading to space. Defence Minister Judith Collins has announced that No. 62 Squadron will become New Zealand’s first military unit focused on space.
Originally active during WWII, No. 62 Squadron used radar to support Allied forces before it disbanded in 1944. Now, 80 years later, the squadron has a new mission: to watch over space activity that affects New Zealand and its partners.
The new space unit will focus on what experts call “space domain awareness.” This means keeping track of satellites, space debris, and any actions in space that could impact safety or security.
“Space is vital for modern life,” said Collins. “We use space for weather forecasts, GPS, and even banking.”
The Defence Force says this step is part of a bigger plan to modernise and protect New Zealand’s technology and security. With space becoming more crowded and competitive, leaders believe it’s important to stay prepared.
The squadron’s return is included in a $12 billion Defence Capability Plan, which will improve New Zealand’s military over the next four years.
