The White Ferns’ chances of making the Cricket World Cup semi-finals have been damaged after a second match in a row was cancelled due to rain.
Their latest game against Pakistan in Colombo was stopped early, with both teams earning just one point.
This result helped South Africa become the second team to qualify for the semi-finals, joining Australia, who had already secured their place. Pakistan batted first and reached 92 for 5 before heavy rain forced the match to be abandoned. Earlier in the game, they were 53 for 3 when the first rain delay began. New Zealand bowler Lea Tahuhu took two wickets and was the best performer with the ball.
The washout follows a similar outcome in the White Ferns’ previous match against Sri Lanka. New Zealand are now fifth in the standings, level with India on four points, but behind on net run rate. India still have three games left, including one against the White Ferns on 23 October.
New Zealand must win their last two matches against India and England to have a chance of reaching the semi-finals. However, they may also need big wins or for other teams to lose, especially to catch up on net run rate.
