The Wellington Saints have won the 2024 New Zealand National Basketball League championship, claiming their 13th title with a close 88–83 victory over the Southland Sharks.
The final took place at the TSB Arena in Wellington on Sunday, in front of excited home fans.
Led by star players Hyrum Harris and Jordan Ngatai, the Saints overcame a tough challenge from the Sharks, who had been on a nine-game winning streak. Harris, who was named Most Valuable Player, scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Ngatai added 19 points and later dedicated the win to the team’s former coach, Kevin Braswell, who passed away in February.
At halftime, the Sharks were ahead 44–41, putting pressure on the Saints. But the home team stepped up in the second half, showing strong teamwork and determination. Nick Marshall also played a key role with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Saints head coach Aaron Young celebrated his first championship win with Wellington, after falling short in the last three finals with a different team.
