The Warriors pulled off a dramatic comeback win against the Newcastle Knights with a stunning try after the final siren. Rising star Leka Halasima scored the match-winner, running 45 metres to snatch victory from the Knights.
The match ended a tough week for Newcastle, whose players were hit with a nasty gastro bug. Coach Adam O’Brien said 12 players were sick before the game, and many couldn’t even eat before kick-off.
Despite their illness, the Knights led 12-6 at halftime. They missed chances to extend their lead, including three missed goals by Dane Gagai and several dropped balls close to the try line.
Late in the match, Jack Cogger kicked a long field goal to give Newcastle a 15-14 lead. The Warriors missed two chances to retake the lead, including a penalty and a field goal.
Just when the Knights looked set for an emotional win, Halasima grabbed a loose ball and sprinted away for the winning try. Warriors coach Andrew Webster called it a “freakish play” and praised his young forward’s talent.
The loss leaves the Knights’ finals hopes nearly gone. The Warriors, however, stay strong in the top four as the season nears its end.
