Savea named Super Rugby Player of the Year

Ardie Savea, the captain of Moana Pasifika, has been named Super Rugby Pacific’s Player of the Year. He earned this title with two rounds still left to play, after building a big lead in votes from other players across the competition.

Savea, 31, was given the highest number of votes by his opponents in last weekend’s close 27–21 win over the Blues. That victory helped Moana Pasifika climb into the top six on the ladder, giving them a strong chance to reach the playoffs for the first time.

Throughout the season, Savea has collected 42 votes, staying well ahead of rivals Tom Hooper (31 votes) and Damian McKenzie (28 votes). His powerful performances include five tries, more than 350 metres after contact, 110 tackles, and 15 turnovers in just 10 matches.

He has also been a standout in the Super Rugby Pacific Fantasy game, being the most picked loose forward for six weeks and one of the top-scoring players.

Moana Pasifika now sit in sixth place and need at least one more win from their last two games to secure a playoff spot. Savea’s leadership has been praised widely. Super Rugby Pacific CEO Jack Mesley said, “Ardie’s passion and power have inspired his team and impressed even his opponents.”

The award is especially meaningful because it is voted on by fellow players and coaches, making it a true sign of respect.

Savea will officially receive his medal on May 31, when Moana Pasifika plays their final regular season game against the Hurricanes in Wellington.
