Auckland and Wellington have both secured spots in the top 20 most liveable cities in the world for 2025. Auckland ranked equal seventh alongside Osaka, Japan, while Wellington held onto its 20th place position.
The index, which reviewed 173 cities worldwide, looked at important factors like healthcare, education, stability, infrastructure, and the environment. These rankings help show which cities offer the best quality of life for residents.
Auckland, also known as the “City of Sails,” climbed two spots from last year’s ninth place. Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, stayed steady in 20th place.
In earlier rankings from 2021, Auckland had been named the world’s most liveable city, and Wellington had placed fourth.
Nearby in Australia, several cities also made the list. Melbourne took fourth place, Sydney came in sixth, while Perth and Brisbane were ranked 15th and 16th.
The top city for 2025 was Copenhagen, Denmark, which ended Vienna, Austria’s three-year run at number one. Vienna is now tied for second place with Zurich, Switzerland.
At the bottom of the list was Damascus, Syria, which remained the least liveable city due to ongoing struggles from years of civil war.
