New Zealander Daniel Hillier won the 105th New Zealand Open at Millbrook Resort.
After holding off Australian Lucas Herbert in a close final round, Hillier finished the tournament on 22 under par. This was a total score of 262, winning by two shots.
The final day was played in strong winds and cold weather, making conditions challenging for the golfers. Hillier began the day leading by one shot and had to stay calm as Herbert tried to catch him. At one point, Hillier’s lead was cut to just one shot after a bogey on the 10th hole.
However, Hillier quickly recovered with birdies on the 11th and 12th holes to move ahead again. Herbert had one last chance on the final hole but his chip shot narrowly missed the hole. Hillier then made par on the 18th green and celebrated with a shower of champagne.
Earlier in the week, Hillier had been married, making the victory even more special. He said it was the “second-best day” of his life after his wedding. He also said it had been the best week of his life and that he had dreamed of winning his national open for a long time.
Hillier is the first New Zealander to win the tournament since 2017. As the winner, he receives automatic entry to The Open Championship, but because he had already qualified, that place will go to Herbert instead. Herbert will now play at Royal Birkdale in July.
