Highlanders beat Crusaders in Opener

The Highlanders shocked the defending champion Crusaders with a 25–23 win at Forsyth Barr Stadium in their Super Rugby season opener on Saturday night.

The match was decided in the 78th minute when first five-eighth Cam Millar calmly kicked a long-range penalty goal from about 50 metres.

The Highlanders’ win was built on tough defence and teamwork. In the first half, they stopped the Crusaders again and again near their tryline, with Jack Taylor, Lucas Casey and Timoci Tavatavanawai making key turnovers to steal the ball back.

A penalty goal from Rivez Reihana right on half-time gave the Crusaders a narrow lead. But after the break, the Highlanders came out firing and scored two tries in a row. Prop Angus Ta’avao crossed after a break from Jonah Lowe, and then Lowe scored soon after by finishing off a sweeping move that began deep in Highlanders territory.

The Crusaders fought back when Will Jordan scored, after coach Rob Penney made six substitutions at once to bring on fresh players. Even with that boost, the Crusaders could not break through the Highlanders’ determined defence again.

A late penalty goal by Taha Kemara edged the Crusaders in front, but it also set the stage for Millar’s dramatic winner. The Highlanders celebrated a big morale boost, especially with questions swirling about coach Jamie Joseph’s future and the season-long loss of All Black lock Fabian Holland.

Next weekend, the Highlanders face another tough test when they host the Chiefs. The Crusaders will face the Brumbies at home in Christchurch.
