Chinese Premier Li Qiang, the highest-ranking Chinese leader to visit New Zealand in seven years, received an official welcome at Government House in Wellington on Thursday morning.

Crowds gathered to greet him ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon later in the day.

This visit highlights the importance of regional security concerns, which are starting to overshadow the previously dominant trade ties between New Zealand and China.

Premier Li, the second-ranking leader in China’s government, arrived in Wellington on Thursday for an uncommon three-day visit to New Zealand. The visit commemorates the tenth anniversary of a strategic comprehensive partnership. He will be in Auckland on Friday and Saturday.
