Auckland FC’s dream debut season in the A-League has ended after a 2-0 loss to Melbourne Victory at Mount Smart Stadium. This result meant Auckland lost the semi-final series 2-1 overall and missed out on reaching the Grand Final in their very first year in the league.

Auckland had won the first leg 1-0 in Melbourne and held that lead for over 50 minutes in the second match. But two quick goals from Melbourne Victory in the second half changed everything.

The first goal came from a long shot by Zinédine Machach that deflected off a defender and fooled the goalkeeper. Just minutes later, Bruno Fornaroli scored again for Victory, giving the visitors the lead both in the game and on total goals.

Auckland fought back hard. They thought they had scored when Logan Rogerson headed the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed because the ball was ruled out of play just before the pass. It was a very close call, and some fans felt it should have counted.

In the final moments, Auckland almost scored again when a mistake by the goalkeeper gave Nando Pijnaker a chance, but his shot was cleared off the goal line.

Even though the result was disappointing, over 29,000 fans cheered for Auckland FC, showing how far the new team has come.

For Melbourne Victory, this win means they move on to the A-League Grand Final. It’s also the second year in a row they’ve knocked a New Zealand team out in the semi-finals.
