Giant South African Train May Set World Record

A freight train in South Africa may have broken a world record after pulling 696 wagons in one go on Sunday, 18 October.

The train was about 7.6 kilometres long. That’s roughly how far most people could walk in an hour and a half.

It was run by Transnet Freight Rail, which runs South Africa’s goods trains for the government. A freight train carries goods rather than passengers.

The train travelled from Saldanha to the Northern Cape on the Iron Ore Export Line. Iron ore is a type of rock that contains iron, which is used to make steel.

The current Guinness World Record for the longest freight train was set in Australia in 2001, by a train with 682 wagons that was about 7.4 kilometres long. That means the South African train had 14 more wagons.

As well as chasing the record, the company wanted to learn more about designing trains, driving them and how well they perform.

Russell Baatjies, the company’s chief executive, said the real value was in “the technical knowledge and operational insights gained” from the trip.

Guinness World Records will now look at evidence from the journey before deciding whether the record is official.

Ka tirohia ināianei e Guinness World Records ngā taunakitanga o te haerenga, i mua i tā rātou whakatau mēnā he rekoata mana tēnei.
