The Pacific nation of Kiribati has won its first-ever football title, beating Seaqaqa FC 6-1 in the final of Fiji’s 86th Inter-District Championship.
It was Kiribati’s first time playing in the tournament, making the win extra special. The team, many of whom learned to play football on sandy grounds back home, trailed 1-1 at halftime before a strong second-half performance turned the game around.
Nabetari Ioera scored twice for Kiribati, while Peter Diehm also scored two goals, including one in the final minute. Substitute Kinione Siu and JR Bauro Martin added further goals as Kiribati pulled away.
The win was even sweeter because Kiribati had lost 4-2 to the same team, Seaqaqa, earlier in the tournament’s group stage.
Supporters packed HFC Bank Stadium in Suva to watch the Kiribati players lift the trophy, a moment organisers say is a big milestone for football in the small island nation.
