A huge superyacht belonging to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos sailed into Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour a few weeks ago, turning heads along the waterfront. The yacht, called Koru, docked at Wynyard Quarter on Tuesday the 29th, after passing Rangitoto Island on its way in.
Koru is about 127 metres long and 17 metres wide, making it one of the largest sailing yachts in the world. To picture the size, that’s longer than a rugby field. It’s reportedly worth around NZ$800 million, which is roughly how much it costs to run a small hospital for a year.
The yacht gets its name from the koru, the curled shape of an unfurling fern frond that’s a well-known New Zealand symbol for new life and growth. It travelled with a smaller support boat called Abeona, which carries extra gear and even a helicopter landing pad.
Dutch shipbuilders spent years building Koru before it was handed over to Bezos in 2023. It has three tall masts and can sail using wind power as well as its engines.
Plenty of Aucklanders stopped along the waterfront to take photos of the enormous vessel as it settled into port. It’s not the first famous superyacht to visit New Zealand, but its size and price tag have made it one of the most talked-about yet.
