Betty Bromage, a 97-year-old woman from Cheltenham, has broken the Guinness World Record for the oldest female wing walker. Wing walking involves standing on the outside of an aircraft while it is flying. For her latest challenge, Betty was strapped to the top of a plane and flown upside down. It was her sixth wing walk.
Betty first tried wing walking when she was 87 years old. She says she enjoys taking on exciting challenges because otherwise she would become bored. She joked that getting onto the wing can be difficult because she is quite short. Once she is safely on the wing, however, she says she has no problem.
Betty completed her latest wing walk to raise money for Cheltenham General Hospital. She also wanted to thank hospital staff who cared for her after she became seriously ill in 2025. Betty had already made history when she set the same world record four years ago. Her latest achievement means she has now broken her own record.
Despite being 97, Betty is already thinking about her next challenge. She says she will need to find something special for her 100th birthday. Her determination has made her a record-breaker more than once. Betty’s story shows that age does not have to stop people from trying something new.
