New Zealand has ended the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with 36 medals, made up of 10 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze.
This placed Aotearoa sixth on the overall medal table, behind Australia, England, Canada, India and hosts Scotland. In total, 674 medals were won by athletes from 36 countries across the eleven-day event.
New Zealand’s medals were spread across a wide range of sports. Swimmer Lewis Clareburt won two gold medals, in the 400m Individual Medley and 200m Butterfly, while athlete Eliza McCartney claimed gold in the Women’s Pole Vault and Zoe Hobbs triumphed in the Women’s 100m. In track cycling, Emma Foy won two gold medals in the Women’s Tandem B events, and weightlifter David Andrew Liti took gold in the Men’s +110kg category. The Silver Ferns also delivered a gold medal in netball, beating Jamaica in a thrilling final.
Erika Fairweather was one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers, winning three silver medals in swimming events, while cyclist Ellesse Andrews collected both a silver and a bronze medal. Judo star Sydnee Andrews also made history, becoming the first New Zealand woman to win Commonwealth Games judo gold, with her teammate Kody Andrews adding a bronze medal in the men’s competition.
Australia topped the medal table overall with 171 medals, including 70 gold, followed by England and Canada. Although New Zealand’s gold medal tally was smaller than at previous Games, the strong performances across swimming, cycling, athletics and netball showed the depth of talent within the New Zealand team.
