Huge wildfires hit Spain and France

More than 80,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as huge wildfires spread across parts of France and Spain.

Strong winds, very dry weather and hot temperatures helped the fires grow quickly. Emergency workers worked around the clock to keep people safe, while both countries asked the European Union for extra help.

In France, thousands of people were evacuated from the Cap Ferret peninsula near Bordeaux and from the nearby Landes region. More than 50 homes were destroyed, and emergency shelters were opened in schools and sports centres. Firefighters faced fast-moving flames, with some areas of forest burning at an incredible speed.

In Spain, thousands of people near Madrid were told to leave or stay inside their homes as several large fires spread. Some fires joined together, making them even harder to control. An elderly man died in a smaller wildfire near Valencia, while firefighting aircraft from other European countries arrived to help battle the blazes.

Scientists say long periods of hot weather and drought have increased the risk of wildfires across Europe. Many families had to leave with only a few belongings, unsure whether their homes would still be standing when they returned. Firefighters continue working to stop the fires and protect communities.
