Spain became World Cup champions after beating Argentina 1–0 in a tense final at MetLife Stadium. The match was played in front of 80,663 fans, many of whom were hoping to see Argentina win again. Ferran Torres scored the only goal just 37 seconds into the second period of extra time. The victory gave Spain its second World Cup title.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi, playing in his third World Cup final, tried to inspire his team but could not find a way through Spain’s strong defence. After the final whistle, Messi looked disappointed as Spain celebrated lifting the trophy. Young Spanish star Lamine Yamal, who had recently turned 19, ran to celebrate with Torres after the winning goal. Many people believe Yamal could become one of football’s biggest stars in the future.

Spain controlled much of the match and the tournament. They had many more shots than Argentina and completed far more passes during the final. Spain allowed only one goal throughout the entire World Cup and stretched their unbeaten run to 38 matches. This defensive performance is expected to be remembered as one of the best in World Cup history.

Although Argentina lost, Messi added another chapter to his remarkable career. He helped his team reach another final and finished the tournament with more goals and assists. He also became the first player to start in three World Cup finals.
