Britain has won the 2025 SailGP Championship in a dramatic final race in Abu Dhabi, beating top rivals New Zealand and Australia. The British team crossed the finish line first to claim their first SailGP title and a prize of $3.5 million.
Skipper Dylan Fletcher said the final race was “unbelievable” and praised all three teams. As their boat sped across the line, the British crew celebrated with cheers and fist pumps under the towering sail of their red and white catamaran.
Australia started the final strongly, but the lead changed several times. Fletcher, along with strategist Hannah Mills, found the best wind shifts and sailed clear in the tricky conditions. The race used a brand new 27.5-metre wing sail for the first time, adding excitement to the contest.
SailGP holds races in cities around the world, and the teams collect points during the season to qualify for the final. Britain had led the standings thanks to strong and consistent results.
New Zealand, led by Peter Burling, hoped to win their first title, while Australia aimed to win back the championship they lost in 2024. Burling raced despite injuring his finger in practice, but his team finished third.
“It’s hard losing like this, but we’re proud of our season,” said Burling. The championship was decided by a single, fast-paced race, making the win all the more special for Britain.
