IKEA is planning to open its very first New Zealand store in Sylvia Park before Christmas this year.

The popular Swedish homeware store hopes to welcome shoppers in time for the holiday season.

Construction of the store is already underway, and while no official opening date has been set, IKEA leaders say the building is progressing well. Karen Pflug, IKEA’s Chief Sustainability Officer, visited Auckland recently and praised the high standards of construction.

The store is designed to be both world-class and eco-friendly, aiming for a top sustainability rating. It will be a full-sized IKEA store, complete with a restaurant serving classic meatballs, plant-based meals, and Swedish cinnamon scrolls.

To make the store feel more “Kiwi,” IKEA has studied over 500 New Zealand homes. They discovered that people here value storage and often use their garages in creative ways, like turning them into home offices or gyms. IKEA plans to reflect this in their showroom.

Pflug also shared that IKEA products are designed in Sweden to balance good looks, usefulness, low prices, and strong quality. She said the company wants sustainable living to be affordable for everyone.

If all goes to plan, New Zealanders could be shopping at IKEA and enjoying Swedish snacks by the end of the year.
