Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire is celebrating a very special new addition: a rare Francois’ langur monkey, known for its striking bright orange fur. The zoo’s staff is thrilled about the baby monkey, whose arrival is a significant event, especially since this species is endangered.
The little one is currently under the attentive care of its 17-year-old mother and the supportive troop of monkeys, along with the expert zookeepers. Visitors will have no trouble spotting the vibrant monkey in its home, thanks to its unique orange color, although it will gradually change to black as the monkey grows up.
Francois’ langur monkeys are primarily found in the forests of China and northern Vietnam. They are recognizable by their sleek black fur, highlighted with distinctive white stripes around their cheeks, and a characteristic tuft of hair atop their heads. Living in large groups, these monkeys enjoy social grooming and feast on a diet of leaves, fruits, and insects.
The species is currently facing a risk of extinction, with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List indicating there are only about 2,000 left in the wild. The primary threats include habitat destruction and other environmental pressures.
Dr. Rebecca Biddle, the zoo’s director of conservation, expressed her joy and emphasized the importance of this birth. “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome this new member to our zoo family. This birth is particularly significant due to the endangered status of the Francois’ langur, making our efforts in conservation more crucial than ever,” she stated. The zoo’s commitment to safeguarding such species is evident in their enthusiasm for the new arrival, marking a hopeful step in the conservation of these unique monkeys.
