The first TVNZ Leaders’ Debate in New Zealand between Labour’s Chris Hipkins and National’s Christopher Luxon has been described as a draw by political experts.

The debate was held live in Auckland and lasted for about 90minutes. It was the first of three live debates between the two prior to the election.

The debate was judged by 1News deputy political editor Maiki Sherman, former Labour leader David Cunliffe, and former MP Tau Henare.

While opinions varied, the overall consensus was that the debate lacked fireworks and neither leader emerged as a clear winner.

Some noted that Luxon appeared more assertive, while Hipkins seemed more reserved. The debate covered topics such as economic plans, crime, and justice. Ultimately, it was viewed as a closely contested match between the two leaders.
