In Christchurch on Saturday, the West Indies cricket team pulled off a remarkable draw against New Zealand after being set a huge target of 531 runs.
Justin Greaves led the fightback with a career-best unbeaten score of 202, staying at the crease for nearly nine and a half hours. He shared a record-breaking 230-run partnership with Kemar Roach, who also made a valuable 58 not out.
This effort helped the West Indies finish with 457-6, the highest fourth-innings score ever in a five-day Test match. Their strong defence stopped New Zealand from winning the match.
Greaves also had a long partnership with Shai Hope, who made 140 runs while playing with an eye infection and wearing sunglasses.
New Zealand had only two fully fit pace bowlers by the final day, both playing just their second Test matches. The pitch was flat, and with their limited bowling options, New Zealand couldn’t take the six wickets they needed to win.
Both teams now have four points in the World Test Championship. The second match of the three-Test series begins Wednesday in Wellington.
